May Bubbles 2020

May is Water Safety Month!

During this time at home become educated on drowning prevention and water safety

Each week in May a newsletter will be sent discussing different water safety topics

This week’s topic is Drowning Facts

Here are some Drowning Facts:

Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children 4 and under

88% of child drownings occur with an adult present

On average there are 10 drownings per day in the United States

Drowning can occur in pools, lakes, oceans, rivers, bath tubs, ponds, hot tubs, and canals- basically any body of water!

But Drowning is PREVENTABLE!!

How?? Evidence-based drowning prevention strategies from the American Academy of Pediatrics:

1) Barriers
2) Supervision
3) Swim Lessons
4) Life Jackets
5) CPR

You as parents are already helping to prevent drowning by enrolling your children in swim lessons

The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development found that children who participated in formal swim lessons had an 88% reduced risk of drowning!

Education and swim lessons are KEY to water safety!
Next week we will discuss the five prevention strategies further
